FROM MAYBE 200 PEOPLE TO 50,000, DEACON FREY WALKED INTO HIS FATHER’S PLACE. After Glenn Frey died, Don Henley did not sound like a man ready to keep the Eagles moving. To him, the band had lost more than a voice. It had lost one of its roots. But when the idea of playing again came back, Henley had one condition. Glenn’s son, Deacon, had to be there. Not as a headline trick. Not as a replacement. Henley saw it more like an old craft being passed from father to son. That is the part that makes the story feel different. Deacon had played small private shows with his father before, maybe in front of 200 people. Then suddenly, he was standing with the Eagles in front of around 50,000. And somewhere in that noise, his father’s place onstage did not feel completely empty.
