Yesterday, we had only been at the hospital for a few minutes before the tears started. Nothing had gone wrong, and there wasn’t any bad news. It was simply one of those moments every parent understands—a moment when fear arrives before a child fully understands what’s happening, and they have to find the courage to face something that seems much scarier than it really is.

A kind nurse gently spread numbing cream on the inside of both of Indiana’s arms. With a warm smile, she explained that it would help reduce the sting from the small needle needed to collect blood for her tests. Her voice was calm and comforting, but even the gentlest reassurance can’t always erase a child’s worries.

As soon as Indiana realized a blood draw was coming, her emotions took over. Tears rolled down her cheeks, and her face showed the unmistakable fear that so many children experience in moments like this. Looking at her, I couldn’t help but see a reflection of myself. I’ve worn that same expression during the hardest moments of life, when emotions become too overwhelming to hide. There’s something incredibly humbling about recognizing your own fears in your child.

Thankfully, Indiana didn’t have to face that fear by herself. Her mama immediately wrapped her in a comforting hug, whispered words of reassurance, and reminded her that she was safe. There were no dramatic speeches—just quiet love, gentle patience, and a steady presence. Sometimes that’s exactly what a frightened heart needs. Little by little, her breathing slowed, and the tears gradually began to fade.

A few moments later, another source of comfort walked through the door. Lia, one of the hospital’s incredible Child Life Specialists, greeted Indiana with a bright smile that instantly changed the mood in the room. Rather than focusing on the medical procedure, she focused on helping Indiana feel understood.

Lia had an amazing way of connecting with children. Instead of using medical terms, she showed Indiana a series of simple pictures featuring a friendly little puppy going through each step of a blood draw. The playful illustrations turned something frightening into something familiar and easy to understand. The puppy stayed brave through the tiny poke and was rewarded afterward with smiles and encouragement.

As Lia patiently explained each picture, the atmosphere slowly shifted. Fear gave way to curiosity. Tears became questions. Shaky breaths turned into calm ones. With every page, Indiana’s confidence quietly grew, replacing the anxiety that had filled the room just moments before.

Hospitals can be overwhelming places, especially for young children. The bright lights, unfamiliar faces, medical equipment, and unexpected procedures can make even a simple visit feel intimidating. Moments like this remind us that healing isn’t only about medicine. It’s also about compassion, patience, and the remarkable people who dedicate themselves to making children feel safe and cared for.

The blood draw itself lasted only a short time, but the kindness surrounding it will be remembered far longer. A loving mother, a caring nurse, and a compassionate Child Life Specialist each helped one little girl discover that courage doesn’t mean never feeling afraid. Sometimes courage simply means crying, taking a deep breath, holding onto someone you love, and finding the strength to keep moving forward.

Yesterday wasn’t remembered because of the tears. It was remembered because of the love, kindness, and gentle encouragement that filled the room, proving once again that even the smallest acts of compassion can leave the greatest impact on a child’s heart.
