Wayne Osmond, the beloved singer, guitarist, and founding member of the legendary family group The Osmonds, passed away on January 1, 2025, at the age of 73. He died peacefully in a Salt Lake City hospital after suffering a massive stroke, surrounded by his devoted wife, Kathlyn, and their five children. The heartbreaking news was confirmed by his brothers, who remembered Wayne as a humble, forgiving man whose optimism and unconditional love touched everyone around him.
Born in Ogden, Utah, in 1951, Wayne began performing as a child alongside his brothers Alan, Merrill, and Jay. What started as a barbershop quartet eventually became The Osmonds, one of the most successful family acts of the 1970s. Wayne’s voice and musicianship helped shape unforgettable songs such as “One Bad Apple,” “Yo-Yo,” and “Down by the Lazy River.” Though often quieter than some of his famous siblings, he was an essential part of the group’s distinctive sound and enduring success.
Wayne faced serious health struggles throughout his later life. He was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 1997, and treatment left him with significant hearing loss. He also suffered a stroke in 2012 that affected his ability to play guitar. Yet he refused to allow hardship to destroy his spirit. His family described him as “the ultimate optimist”—a man who continued to find happiness in faith, music, laughter, and family.
Although no verified account of Wayne’s exact final spoken words has been publicly released, his family shared the message they believed he would want the world to remember: that the gospel of Jesus Christ is true, families are forever, and—in a touching glimpse of his humor—banana splits are the best dessert.
Donny Osmond said he was grateful to visit Wayne in the hospital before his passing, recalling how his brother brought light, laughter, and love into countless lives.
